This Week On The Philebrity Player: Puzzles Like You By Mojave 3
Caution: This is not your ex’s Mojave 3. You know the one: Addicted to melancholy, breezy but darkly so, mired in 4AD-isms and the still lingering ghost of shoegaze. Not that we’re judging: When this UK band emerged from the ashes of Slowdive, all those things more than sufficed for a time. But the way Mojave 3 has transformed between their last record, the rather somber Spoon And Rafter, and their latest, Puzzles Like You makes this one inspired and, yes, addictive in a whole new way. And for us, it’s one of the more remarkable records we’ve had on the Player thus far. Puzzles Like You is longhair pop at its finest, bouncy on its feet, and still every bit as wistful as earlier records like Out Of Tune. But if you’re a newcomer to the band, just know this: This is not the first totally gorgeous record Mojave 3 has made, and by the sounds of things, not the last, either.
