Smerconish: Marine Massacre Of Mothers, Small Children And Old People In Wheelchairs Is ‘Understandable’

Perhaps the Marines lied about what occurred so as to cover-up their deliberate killing of innocents. My instinct is to be skeptical of that view. U.S. Marines shooting a 4-year-old boy in the chest, or a 77-year-old man in a wheelchair? I don’t want to believe that. I have too much respect for humankind. Yes, American humankind in particular. And I am skeptical for the same reason that I have always doubted the allegations of rape at Duke. If you tell me that among 46 lacrosse players there is one bad seed who raped a woman, I could believe it. But if you tell me that among 46, three committed rape and many more did nothing about it, it doesn’t pass the smell test. My head and my heart tell me the same thing here. One bad Marine in Kilo Company who couldn’t rein it in on a battlefield after seeing a colleague murdered in a location where three months prior twenty other brothers died? Ok. But several Marines executing innocent civilians, then protected by several colleagues? It doesn’t pass the smell test.
Hey Mikey, you don’t pass the smell test!
More after the jump…
Jesus Christ on a crutch, Michael! Where to even begin with this? You’ve obviously had quite a bit of the Kool-Aid, and firsthand experience has shown that reason and reality-checks are functionally useless until that shit wears off. Let’s try this: Imagine that a foreign army invades our country and overthrows the government. Violent chaos ensues, followed by a protracted occupation. Now, the Hummers of the Occupiers — yes, these bastards have a thing for cruel irony — run up and down your tony street in the Main Line, day and night. Sometimes they accidentally run over children and pets. God, you hate those guys! Some of your neighbors are in the resistance and from time to time they plant IEDs in the roads of the Main Line. (Stick with me, Michael, I need you to focus. We are almost at the end.) The next time one of these bombs goes off, a Hummer pulls up in front of your house, soldiers storm inside and kill not just you, Michael, but your wife, your children, and your 76-year-old amputee grandfather in his wheelchair — kill them as they beg for their lives. Then they went next door. (This reality-based reality shit is pretty heavy, innit Michael?) Now wouldn’t you eternally spin in your grave if you somehow knew that back in the home country of the Occupiers, a man ensconced in privilege and comfort writes an editorial soothing the deep pangs of guilt amongst his readers over this atrocity? It was regrettable, he writes, but “understandable.” In the words of the bard, you tell me: How does it feel?
