Advance Warning: This Saturday, SAT. JUNE 17 Northern Liberties Comes Alive!
Poor baby. You missed the Thrilladelphia/Hancock St./Philebrity Block Party jawn back at the end of April and you didn’t even get a lousy t-shirt. Well, payback is a bitch, for this Saturday, NoLibs itself will become a living, breathing testament to the notion of “The Jumpoff.” As if the Liberty Lands Music Fest and The Art Star Craft Fair going on that same day weren’t enough, Philebrity and Tower Dev are hosting a little thing we like to call Philebrity Beach House: Basically, we’re taking our little block of Hancock Street, closing it off from traffic and loading it up with all the bands, beats, babes, bros, baby pools and concrete-beach-ness we can have without making God VERY UPSET. We’re especially excited about this one, as it’ll be the first event in Series 1021, the summer series of free concerts, screenings and other events we’ll be presenting a few times a month. As you can see on the flyer there, we’ve got some pretty great bands, but for the uninitiated, here’s a handy crib sheet:
¬? The Situation: Lovers of the La’s and Brian Jonestown Massacre take note: The Situation carry on like a bunch of right louts, but they have hearts made of butter. Their self-titled debut is out on Elephant Stone right now, and it goes great with obscenely large sunglasses.
The Situation: “Pine Street” [mp3]
The Situation: “Pill Box Locket” [YouTube via Philebrity]
¬? Adam Arcuragi: We love Adam so much, we put his new record up on The Philebrity Player this week. You can read what we’ve had to say about him here and here, but really, you can judge for yourself. Here is the goodness:
Adam Arcuragi: “1981″ [mp3, from Adam Arcuragi]
Adam Arcuragi: “The Christmas Song” [mp3, from Adam Arcuragi]
Adam Arcuragi: “Change My Name To David” [mp3, non-album]
¬? Our Kid: We wanted to make history at Philebrity Beach House, and wow, we just might. This will be Our Kid’s first gig EVER and we couldn’t be more excited about it. Featuring the Ralston Brothers, Our Kid kind of sounds like the Libertines as told to Okkervill River, if that makes any sense, with the weird orange color of Darkness On The Edge Of Town swirled in for good measure. They are destined to become blog rock superstars, and here, we present to you some world-premiere mp3 stylings. These are from the Our Kid 5-song demo that’s floating around, recorded in a single afternoon in, we shit you not, an Airstream trailer in someone’s backyard in Allentown. I know this will sound crazy, but I see the beginnings of true greatness here. Mark these words ‚Äî Our Kid will be bigger than, like, Teenage Fanclub this time next year.
Our Kid: “I Am The Law” [mp3]
Our Kid: “I Am The Iconoclast” [mp3]
¬? Throughout the day, the fabulous Return Of The Last Love DJs ‚Äî aka Chetana, Bryan and Pearl ‚Äî will be spinning world psychedelic summer classics, a term we’re going to use right up until we get a cease and desist from David Byrne himself. David, please meet us at the baby pool at 4:20.
So there you have it! Sun! Fun! Tunes and friends. It’s going to be a sweet jam. Stay tuned for updates, and if you are going to be spending the afternoon in NoLibs ‚Äî and we highly recommend you do ‚Äî please drop on by: We’ve got a handful of gooey sunblock with your name on it. Oh wait. That’s not sunblock.
Philebrity Beach House: Because We Can. Because We Must. Keep us in your Myspace loop for this and other Philebrity-related shenanigans this summer.
