It’s Official: Keeping Young People In Philly Is A Full-Time Job, Yo
Philadelphia Business Journal today reports that the Knowledge Industry Partnership is well on its way to becoming a proper non-profit, which basically means that if the brain drain continues (and oh, how it continues) someone will soon be directly to blame. And while we congratulate the City on finally putting together our first official Stop-The-Bleeding Office, let’s not get too huggy just yet. Anecdotally, we’ve seen in recent months the brain drain up close: Friends who may well have stayed in Philly if only they could get jobs in their fields. Let’s see, first, there was Laura, who worked in marketing; she had to move to NYC for job so she could ‚Äî get this ‚Äî make the mortgage payments on her house in NoLibs. Then there was Gabe, who wanted to work in the music industry (publicity, label, whatever) and well, you know how that goes. Mad Tony is leaving because there’s not too many decent-paying design gigs around here. And those three were just off the top of our head. Our message to KIP: Our friends love living here. Please go out and make sure that they can get jobs. Otherwise, you’ll just be another office of Shit We Should Really Get Around To Doing Someday.
