This Week On The Philebrity Player: BRIGHTBLACK MORNING LIGHT
Just what is it about mystery and music that makes magic when combined? When we think about it, some of our favorite bands, we don’t know dick about. Think of it: Right up until all of those books came out, we lived in a total informational blackout regarding The Smiths. We still know fuck-all, relatively, about Felt or Orange Juice. And the truths of what was really going on with Bob Dylan or Joy Division or The Vaselines or Godspeed You Black Emperor or The Feelies will probably be obscured forever, their inherent mysteries thrown under an even greater tundra of critspeak and MOJO magazine after-the-fact analysis. That’s why we’re not really sweating how, when you get right down to it, we know next to nothing about Brightblack Morning Light, this week’s featured artists on The Philebrity Player. (I mean, this, after all, is their bio.)
But we know we like them. So much, in fact, that after we heard it, we pretty much said, sight unseen, yes, we want this on the player. We don’t know who these people are, but we know we want to be down with them.
Turns out, a lot of other people are getting the same idea: Brightblack has already been loosely affiliated with all your New Weird heroes, from our very own Espers to Joanna Newsom, to that squirrelly godfather of indie cageyness, Will Oldham. But that’s not why we like them. We like them because they sound like Spiritualized if they came from a weird alligator swamp in Florida and were raised by their freak uncle, Steely Dan. Soft bombs permeate Brightblack Morning Light, and with summer getting its official kickoff this weekend, we can already tell that this is the one that’s going to permeate every sweeping out of ashes in the morning, every heavy makeout session and every stony silent bike ride. It’s like these guys are living the summer in music that we’re intuiting in life. Heavy. Totally fucking heavy, and so much bliss. Brightblack Morning Light. Get into this.
