Village Voice’s ‘Mayor Of Asshole City’ Impeached By New Times; Dean of American Rock Critics Next To Be Expelled?
Formerly from Philly, newly axed Voice Music Editor Chuck Eddy (pictured, right) is the latest used piece of jet trash to be expelled from the airlocks of the New Times mother ship, which bought the Voice last year and has been slowly but surely disemboweling its codgered innards. Hard to say how we feel about this, beside ‘who couldn’t see that comin’?’ We read the Voice religiously in the 80s and in a lot of ways it’s was the guidebook for our then-burgeoning screamingly angry liberalism. For more than a decade, though, it’s been more or less moribund and in dire need of radical transplant surgery. And then we had our own little rumble in the jungle with He Who Hates Wilco so we’ll not pretend to be unbiased here. Can’t speak for Eddy’s replacement, not even sure who he is, which is perhaps the point. The bigger question is who will be brought in as the Editor-and-Chief for the grandaddy of all alt-weeklies. Sources tell us that upwards of 50 Eddytors have been asked the standard “where do you see yourself in five years”. (The wrong answer, by the way, is “WITH YOUR JOB, ASSHOLE”. Trust us.) And the scuttlebutt around the P&P water cooler is that a prominent Inky reporter is being given SERIOUS consideration for the Voice’s Editor Chair. Stay tuned.
