Philly Film Fest Picks: Friday I’ve Got Puppy On My Mind
SPOTLIGHT ON: Puppy, Australia, 92 min. Director: Kieran Galvinuld
[Festival Page]
You’d lose your current job as professional screw-up to Liz (Nadia Townshend) in a sweet heartbeat. Girl manages to get kicked out of her sisterís house after their brother dies and she pawns sisí necklace to pay for a surgical operation on her dog that she just ran over. Doggie goes to heaven, anyway. Tragic nods all around? The maniacal truck driver Aiden who kidnaps her, played with glee by Bernard Curry, turns out to be a godsend. Sure, thereís a little never-wed hysteria when Aiden insists that Liz is his runaway wifey. I fully buy the bond that builds between the two crazy kids. But for logicís sake, where are they getting the drugs from when domestic hell breaks loose and both become housebound? Itís not like they live in Fishtown. Love makes no sense, but know this: Thereís nothing like shacking up with a nutty honey who turns out to be quite the Romeo when he takes his meds. ó Kelly White
Playing: The Cinema at Penn, 5pm today; 9:30pm Tuesday.
ALSO RECOMMENDED:
Lucky Number Slevin: Josh Hartnett, Morgan Freeman and Ben Kingsley steal shit, lie about it, get beat up, and then repeat. Sadly, no gay love scenes (that we’re aware of).
Hell (L’Enfer): New movie from the guy who did the Blue/White/Red trilogy. This one’s the second part in his new trilogy based on Dante’s Inferno. After he’s through with this, we hear he’s remaking the entire third season of Eight Is Enough.
Shame Of A City: New doc reveals that, contrary to our stellar reputation for fair play, decency and respect for democratic ideals, Philadelphians in politics are actually, well, not like that. At all.
