Readers Write: Somewhere, There Used To Be A, Um, Washie-Washie Around Here
Rec’d this list of buildings slated for demolition with the advent of the expansions. Might have to hop on some newsboxes again:
I’ve taken an index of all buildings in the Path. They are:
+ 1238 Race - The fire hall. Built 1925.
+ 105 N. Watts St. - Presently an architecture workshop.
+ 140 N. Juniper St. - A small garage.
+ 142 N. Juniper St. - A small, ancient looking house.
+ 1326 Race - Apartments
+ 1320 Race - Office building, with some interesting architectural details.
+ 13?? Race - A car wash. (They can have this.)
+ 1302-1306 Race - Apartments/Condos
+ Race & 13th Corner - The Penn View Grill
+ 146 N. 13th St. - Former home of Lithographic Publications Inc, now “The Lithographic Lofts.” A lovely brick building with intricate details, and a fine example of the architecture of Late 19th-Century Industrial Philadelphia.
+ The Metzger Building - Houses part of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the street-level PAFA gallery.
+ ??? N 13th St. - Bucks Hardware, open since 1921.
+ 1315 Cherry St. - The Gilbert Building - Seems connected to PAFA, and houses many arts and culture organizations, including The Fabric Workshop and Museum, The Asian Arts Initiative, Vox Populi Gallery, and The Paul Green School of Rock.
+ 1319 Arch - An adult bookstore.
+ 111 N. Broad St.
+ 121 N. Broad St. - Former Oddfellows Temple, built 1895. Now an office building.
I ask you, oh city burgermeisters: Is it worth it? Does Appleby’s really need the money? We’d love to hear more about this ó and how, if possible, it might be stopped ó from our readers in the political arena.
