Inky: Out With The Old, In With The Nothing
And so the Inquirer ushers in the era of buy-byes. It’s been bad enough to see the paper slide into irrelevance ‘lo these past few years, but lately, something about seeing the carnage up close has been oddly aggravating as the paper increasingly takes on an “Everything Must Go!” vibe. We’re not content (nor does it even feel particularly constructive) to say “I told you so.” Nor is it particularly gratifying to feel that next level of I-told-you-so when you realize that Knight-Ridder’s buyout plan, as far as the paper goes, is short-sighted to the point where it’s getting entirely impossible to even imagine an Inky in existence two years from now (or less). And when you see up close the kind of big-city-newspaper stalwarts that got swept out yesterday (see below), it’s hard just not to be, well, kind of pissed off. Goodbye, guys. Your paper should have done better by you.
