Breaking: WYSP Changing Formats… Now.

yspOver the transom comes the news that 94 WYSP ó long the home for outmoded date-rape rock that even your little brother got over in 1999 ó is switching its format to something called “Free FM.” But wait. We know that sounds cool ó images of Rick Flom mooning over an Emerson, Lake & Palmer record while taking phone calls from the lovelorn ó but seriously, it’s not that cool. What it is, essentially, is the station publicly freaking out about how they’re going to keep Howard Stern listeners once Stern switches to satellite radio in ‘06. WYSP’s emboldened, enlightened answer to this quandary? It’s clearly to just hope like hell they can pick up the scraps after Stern switches by filling the rest of their schedule to Stern-Lite.

New schedule and more analysis after the jump.

To wit:

: WYSP’s New Weekday Schedule (all times ET):

– THE HOWARD STERN SHOW (6:00 AM - approximately 10:30 AM)

– THE BARSKY SHOW (approximately 10:30 AM - 3:00 PM)

– THE KIDD CHRIS SHOW (3:00 PM - 7:00 PM)

– COUZIN ED (7:00 PM - 10:00 PM)

– MATT AND HUGGY (10:00 PM - 2:00 AM)

– RICK ALLEN (2:00 AM - 6:00 AM)

WYSP-FM will continue to broadcast Rock music during weeknights, 7:00 PM until 6:00 AM, and weekends, beginning Friday night at 7:00 PM and concluding Monday morning at 6:00 AM, and the station will exist online (www.94wysp.com), featuring music previously heard over the air. WYSP-FM will continue to be the radio broadcast home of the NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

So essentially it’s a talk station. If you really want to break it down, it’s probably going to be a farts-and-boobs talk station. We’re listening to the format switchover right now, and these douches are actually reading parts of the constitution, acting like this is not some crazy move of desperation. This is really weird, and we never thought we’d say this, but Slipknot would actually sound pretty good right about now.
WYSP: Home Of The Free. Like Pepsi Free.
