Loving That Loveless Phillies Love: A Diptych

As baseball season starts to wind down ó†isn’t it supposed to end in February or something? ó man’s thoughts naturally turn to shaping the Phillies’ losing myth into a kind of real-time Slapshot homage. You know the deal: “I LOVE these guys! They can’t win for losin’!” Writers especially seem to go on for this curious mix of nostalgia, trivia and sweet, comfy fatalism. Two takes have surfaced on this in recent days, one was last week’s Philadelphia Weekly cover story by Daniel McQuade, and that was fine. But the one that really sort of grabs us on the batty lose-loving fan level has got to be Brother JT‘s Phillies blog. For the uninitated, Brother JT is pretty much the Pennsylvania psychedelic rock community’s answer to both Walt Whitman and Malcolm X. He’s got the poetry and he’s got the rhetoric. Most of it usually about drugs and freaking out, though. When he turns his attention to the Phillies, though? Hoo-boy! Amazing. Look at that drawing. Waiter, I’ll have what he’s having.
