Welcome New Yorkers!
Frankly, Jessica Pressler’s article in the New York Times yesterday on Philly’s increasing sixth-borogh-ness nearly broke the coggy cuckcoo rusty rickety brain of every Philebrity robot on the premises. On one hand, Pressler’s story — the fact of its very existence, really — points to a raising of the bar here culturally wherein basically, it’s like New Yorkers can, you know, feel okay living down here. Which sounds like backhanded praise but tell the truth: It’s probably only a few years since you yourself began to feel okay about living here, isn’t it? On the other hand, there is something so patently offensive and myopic about the very concept of “the sixth borough” that, yes, the blood boils. “Patently offensive and myopic” is OUR steez! We INVENTED that shit! So, to summarize: It’s a draw. Pressler, you get a pass for this one. But God help you if you start pitching stories about Bonk’s.
