The Posi Guy: We Are The Champions! Plus, A Busman’s Guide To 610 WIP
The Posi Guy reports: It may come as no secret that I love me some sports. I spend most of my workday trying to get blood from stones at City Hall, and sports have always been my foot in the door in that regard. Can you believe Rick Mariano doesnít want to talk about Harry Nilsson records? I have let my casual, work related interest slide into full-fledged fandom. I attended the NFC Championship game this past year and had men, who on any other day of the year would have beat the tight pants off of me, hugging me and telling me that they loved me. It is impossible to be wrapped up in the performance of Donovan McNabb, or Chase Utley without turning to that bastion of Philadelphia fandom, 610 WIP. There is no better way to get your ìfinger on the pulse of the city of Philadelphiaî (their words), than listening to the best radio station in Philly (apologies to The Beat). I am pretty close to an all day listener. My favorite dude is Anthony Gargano; he is on from 10-3 with Mike Missanelli (who recently replaced the much missed Steve Moderato). Gargano is as South Philly as it gets. He often begins sentences with ìI love aÖî, as in ìI love a Cabanaî, or ìI love a salmon fishing trip.î He also happens to be a great sportswriter who I recently learned writes only by candlelight.
Next week will be an excellent chance to start listening to 610 for those of you who arenít acclimated. You can skip the morning show nonsense, and Eskin from 3-7 and tune in from 7-11 next week to hear another favorite of mine Glen Macnow (aka the Professor) host a week of the greatest games in Philadelphia sports history. Glen is the perfect guy for this as he is smart, easy to listen to, and tends to go toward fun and games as opposed to confrontation. You can check out his list of the 150 greatest guy movies here, and his list of the Delaware Valleyís 10 best burgers here.
The full schedule of games for next week is as follows:
Monday: Game 6 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Championship, guests TBA.
Tuesday: Game 4 of the ‘82-’83 NBA Championship, with Coach Billy Cunningham.
Wednesday: 1980 NFC Championship game, guests TBA.
Thursday: Game 6 of the 1980 World Series, with Dallas Green.
