Chilltop: Most Funky Fresh And Boss Cool Lampin’, American Joe!

CokeWe were trying to hold off on an analysis of Chilltop: The Commercial entirely ó†in large part because we don’t feel like handing Coca-Cola a big chunk of free advertising ó†but now that the commercial is airing, it’s just too goddamn stupid to ignore any longer. (Never you mind the fact that it’s for something called Coke Zero, which seems offensive enough on its own.) In it, G. Love and a gang of Benneton-complex friends hang out on a rooftop in the Illadelph and duly massacre the old “I’d Like To Buy The World A Coke” ditty. G. does his whole cracker-with-a-slide-guitar thing (most inane and, frankly, factually wrong lyric: “You’ve got everything you need in the palm of your hand/Peace love and unity throughout our land”) and everybody else stands around and stares at the sky like they’re waiting for the weedman or some shit. Is there a saving grace, though? You bet there is, ‘cos all of a sudden, you’re like, OMG, that’s Crystal from Repo Records!!! Wow! After that, though, it’s straight back downhill, if only because the lyrics of the new Coke song seem to have been written by the dude who wrote Mr. Sparkle with dialogue coaching from whoever scripted Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. In 1992, no less. Homey don’t play that!
