Decked out in his Air Jordan IV’s, a shiny tie and his trusty Philebrity pin, Benny set out to rub elbows with Philly’s urban elite at John Legend’s”Get Lifted” record release party at Suede last night. Replete with Jacksonville-bound ‘ballers, neo-soulers Aaries and just one Russell Simmons shy of the entire Def Jam posse, Benny was living it up with the A-list of Philly black folks. He even saw Carlos (the bartender from Aqua) and made a black girl coo with his knowledge of King Britt’s mÈlange of old-school DJ Premiere jams and new-school Vikter Duplaix re-mixes. But…here’s the headline — John Legend is the real deal. Still fighting off a cold and only armed with an 82-key Korg, he rose to the occasion, rousing the free-Henny-swilling crowd into a chorus of “holla, holla, holla” that made this white boy shake what his mama gave him. Philly’s own John Legend — hometown boy going places….good speed, young man!
